The recommendations for the 2015-2016 influenza season have been released by the Advisory Committee of Immunization Practices (ACIP) in the MMWR .
To summarize the ACIP recommendations, the influenza vaccine is recommended annually for all children 6 months of age and older who do not have contraindications. There is no preference this year between the live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) or the inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) for healthy children 2 years of age and older. Children ages 6 months to 8 years of age who are receiving their first season of influenza vaccine or have only received less than 2 doses prior to July 1, 2015, need to receive a series of 2 doses at least 4 weeks apart. In the following seasons, only 1 dose is a required a year.
The influenza vaccine this season contains new strains based on studies from the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 influenza seasons. The same component will be from the influenza A (H1N1) and new this season will be from the influenza A (H3N2) and influenza B.
Prevention is KEY! Stay healthy this season by getting your influenza vaccine and of course washing your hands with soap and water! We, in the clinic at Aasha Pediatrics, have already received our influenza vaccine. The flu vaccine is now available in the clinic. Please call to schedule your appointment.
